Race Day Looks

Taking place during the unpredictable weather of mid-March Cheltenham it's probably a good thing there is no official dress code for the Festival, but the style stakes are still high, so here are three looks you can bet on come race day. 

Dark Horse - 

If you are looking for a premium silhouette with a modern edge team navy slim fit checked trousers and a black polo neck under a dark grey, double-breasted overcoat. The overcoat not only has the functionality of defending against the often-miserable March weather but it also has plenty of storage for betting slips and with any luck, all your winnings! Finish the outfit with a thin scarf and a pair of brown monk strap shoes. 

Cotswold Colt - 

A waxed jacket is no stranger to a race course. To take your wax jacket to a level above most in front of the grandstand, pair it with a cable knit jumper and chinos. Cheltenham is renowned for some pretty wild chino colours which leads to some 'interesting' outfit combinations. Keep it classic; A green, navy, black or brown jacket will all be complemented by a darker chino. Set this look off with a pair of black Chelsea boots and a tweed flat cap.    

Handsome Hurdle - 

The casual blazer, crisp white shirt and denim jeans combination is the holy trinity of race day fashion. A timeless style choice which is almost an unofficial uniform for male racegoers. Accessorise with a fresh pair of brogues and a baker boy hat to wear this look better than most in front of the grandstand.

Fashion Don’ts -

Here are a couple of fashion faux pas to avoid on a trip to Cheltenham;

• Not having a backup. March weather can change at the drop of a hat, so don't travel down with only your spring gear as you could wake up on race day in arctic conditions. 
• Crazy colour combinations. As mentioned there can be some garish colour clashing around the grandstand; lime green, orange, mauve and teal are colours often seen combined in one outfit at Cheltenham. Don't be that guy, you'll stand out... But not in a good way.
• Suede or material shoes. Even if the weather holds out. The ground in and around the course gets churned up by the level of foot traffic over the week. Don’t risk it.
• Not being comfortable. Seating and space are at a premium come race day. You don't want to be worrying about your feet hurting or the top buttons on your trousers being too tight and miss the photo finish. Think practical.
